If he isn’t man enough to just put a label on it, move on. But he’s a man, which means he’s an idiot, don’t wait around for him to figure it out because he won’t do it on your timetable.
Probably because they’re manipulation is only possible because their victims generally can’t (or won’t) understand that they are a person incapable of empathy or guilt. They consider this to be an advantage that makes them better than regular people.

His reaction has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with his insecurity. If I was you (and I had the emotional bandwidth to deal with it) I would acknowledge and empathize with his insecurity, and ask if there is anything he needs from you to help him cope with it.
I wouldn't try reasoning with him at all. He is 100% acting out of his emotions, and you can't reason away emotions. Maybe encourage him to get some therapy so he can learn to cope with his emotions.
I am probably over-sympathizing with him, just because I can relate. It sucks to have these insanely irrational, controlling feelings and not know how to cope. However you decide to handle it, I am sure you will find something that is best for you both.
