I did not recommend they immediately jump to couples counseling, that is the epitome of dumb, as you said. But if op is insisting on trying to save her marriage, couples counseling is going to be essential.
Whether you or I would recommend she stay or not doesn't matter. It's up to op. And if op decides to stay, she needs to use every ounce of support at her disposal.
Her husband obviously needs to be willing to go to individual therapy first, and he needs to be open to doing the work there before couples counseling is even on the table. But. It still needs to be done.
