Why would people educate themselves in Autism just because it exists? You educate yourself about things like that if you have friends or family with Autism or work around people with Autism. It's impossible to educate yourself on everything. I mean, how many of us know sign language if we don't have a need for it?
I have ADHD. Got diagnosed late in life. I only knew generic facts about ADHD before my diagnosis, now I know a lot more. I still don't know shit about Autism more than the generic facts but I sure as hell don't picture Rain Man when someone tells me they're autistic.
Thing is, just because someone has Autism, you're not obligated to overlook their bad behaviour. You can understand that they're not being intentionally hurtful and still realise that you are being hurt and feel the need to distance yourself from the person hurting you. Especially since things will probably not change if they are hurting you due to their Autism, because that isn't going anywhere.
