I think you posted this before OP made some edits and additions, but you might want to consider:
It's not just blatant criticism. She asked the question and pressured him on an answer when she could tell he wanted to avoid the conversation.
She pressed and pressed until she got an answer she didn't like. It has nothing to do with her own intelligence, this kind of thing was always going to happen based on her other quotes.

Could OP's husband have handled this particular situation a little better? Probably. But I'll bet a mountain of gold against a barrel of fish that this isn't the only situation like this that has ever happened between them. If you ask questions you don't want the answer to, and badger the person for an answer, eventually you are going to get something that isn't “perfect”.
Yes, but there are also lots who know women exist for so much more. The less attention we give to the former hopefully we will find the more we see of the latter
