I also think your ages matter here. When you got together, you were 19 and he was 20. Both of you were just entering that period of rapid growth and change as we transition into full adulthood. You guys have lasted longer than most, but that may or may not be a good thing.
If you know for sure you need space to heal and move on, don't set up a scenario where he can talk you out of it. Figure out the logistics, get stuff out of there while he's gone, and then just tell him.
