I feel like we are missing some information here. Does the mother have a health condition? If she has a physical or cognitive impairment, I could see why he would be working and helping her financially. Also why she is cooking and doing laundry with him if she needs assistance. It would make more sense as to why he is hesitant to leave her alone, too.
As an adult who helps care for a parent in poor health, I can understand that kind of commitment. Barring a missing reason, I do agree that the level of dependence is unusual.
