As someone with a non-English name, it definitely is racism. When people don’t care to learn my name but can pronounce the names of Game of Throne characters, I know the deal. It doesn’t mean they are full-blown nazis but it still is rooted in racism if they can’t even bother to learn her name after 6 years. Asian names being mocked with silly noises is such a basic racist insult that we can’t pretend they simply don’t know any better. They just don’t care – they don’t respect her or they’d bother to know her name after 6 years.

I agree that the boyfriend needs to be the one who confronts the family. But it’s a trend where the white partner in an interracial relationship downplays or fails to see the severity of certain racially insensitive behaviors and runs headfirst into it before they need to be corrected by their non-white partner which is a labor in or itself. It’s not just enough to do something after you are told. You have to make an extra effort to know and understand what is and isn’t acceptable. He needs to do better.
