Neither of you are wrong. But let me clear something up.
You in no way, no how, no ever realm of possibility can say you know he didn't have a weapon. People can also kill with just kicks and smashing. No guns doesn't mean shit, no guns just mean law abiding citizens do not have them.
You're not wrong, he's not wrong. There is a million possible outcomes for any situation like this. But you definitely do have some type of superiority complex, or naivety. Because
What if the guy grabbed at his ankle, a pistol and shot you and your friend? Or a machete. At 30 ft range that machete is going to win almost every time.
Legally, he's more correct though. Say the stranger did swing on you, and missed. Your friend steps in ONLY and ONLY punches him one time… well bad luck was on your friends side. The guy suffered a type of damage that left him in a coma, stroke, death, etc. Now you're friend is facing legal charges for causing serious bodily harm/death for a guy who only swung one time.
You also don't know that they didn't know each other. I respect your thoughts and agree with you, but you make way too many assumptions.
FYI from someone in law enforcement, someone high off certain drugs can turn into a super almost invincible human. There are times they can take shots and keep coming at you.
At the end of the day, we're only human. I'm not sure your skill level/size but I always am huge on “if you fuck around, you might find out.” I probably would have done exactly what you did. With her being pregnant, I would have done exactly what you did, maybe intervened a little sooner. But I also am trained for critical incidents, with guns, mostly relying on hand to hand combat and combatives to restrain, as well as deescalating, drug induced, etc.
But you also are asking if your friend was right/wrong? I don't think he was. You failed to share if he looked after anyone, had a wife or kids? And same as yourself.
Legality, morals, and survival are all different items. None of them go hand and hand with the other.
