I could see the person being honest as a warning, although it could be someone who is simply bitter.
I would also advise OP to look out for other flags and watch for the careful bending of the truth that this type seems to thrive on. They won’t overtly lie, but they will take selective words and make them into wholly different meanings than the original, and will do so in such a convincing way that you may believe you meant it their way as well.

No-one gets that much debt by mistake, especially if she has a well payed job. She has a problem and it is not easily fixed.
