You do not pick a partner and change whatever you dislike about them, at least not on the big scale of life plans. You pick a partner that already fits what you are looking for and you did not fit what he wants.
Both can’t be abusers. Abuse implies a power imbalance that one uses their power to manipulate, terrorize and hurt the other. He is clearly the abuser. What you’re describing is reactive abuse in which the abuser manipulates the victim into reacting so the victim can blame themselves for the abuse. That way the victim’s self esteem goes down and further isolates them through shame. What OP does need to focus on us decision making skills that led her into this type of relationship. She’s not an abuser.
