This could definitely be a red flag of underlying character defects. But if they’ve been together four years and married for two and this is the first sign of trouble I think it’s likely (and hopefully for OP’s sake) something they’ve matured out of and left behind in favor of a healthier life. You are under no obligation to attempt to fight an attacker, especially one that is physically larger and escalated the violence. You were stunned and shut down to avoid provoking further severity of violence, that is a completely normal and valuable response for your body to do to try to protect itself. You did nothing wrong
Are you sure the email is actually to his mother? Maybe he put “mom” as the alias to an email address of another woman (not mom) to hide the fact that he is messaging someone else.
