1. While I think that your attitude is morally right, it is possible that your friend thinks you're relying on him saving the situation in case things go south. It may be that he's had bad experiences with people picking fights with him because he's big or that he's always had to take care not to hurt others and he really doesn't appreciate being dragged into situations like that.
