For me, I just needed time to come to terms with it. My hairline started receding at like 18, haha. At the end of the day I've never had anyone be an asshole about it to me. Sure there is a comment or a joke here and there. But the person that cared the most was me, until I realized it was almost no limitation for me whatsoever, life goes on.
I will say, with the way I balded, cutting my hair, or having my hair cut regularly with a “number 1” on the clippers looks best. And I think that's true in most cases, longer hair mostly just doesn't look good when you're balding.
