I'm not doubting you, but this guy can hang out with his friends and family in the exact same situation and have zero issues before, during or after, it's only when his SO is the only one present that it becomes “debilitating”.
I'm sure you have situations you avoid entirely whenever possible because you know they'll trigger an overload or you make your necessary appearance and boogie as soon as it's polite to do so. That doesn't seem to be the case here.
To me this sounds like a guy who grew up in an age where autism is in the spotlight and he's plucking symptoms to control and manipulate his spouse. It's unfortunate but it happens every time a big medical issue gets pushed to the forefront.
For my generation it was ADD/ADHD. Yes, a lot of my peers legitimately had the diagnosis but a lot of them said they did to excuse being shitty to people or being a flaky friend. Bipolar was a big one to symptom pluck from as well, especially for girls. “I can't help snapping out on him cuz he was talking to a girl who's actually his cousin I'm bipolar” or something similar was a common excuse for women to put their hands on or be generally controlling their boyfriend.
