I’m from a fairly large city, but my parents are older so I guess it plays a part. But that’s what they taught me.
I can’t really tell what their end goal was then if they were telling me to do this for myself as a base, because that isn’t how they professed it to me but as a way to make myself an appealing partner that will contribute to making a home. And I guess that makes sense to me, if I were to come across someone with 3 degrees for example it would show me that they have years of followthrough, they know how to problem-solve, can work in groups (oh, the dreaded group assignments, how I do not miss them) and so on. I would want someone who can cooperate to be the person I live! my life with. Maybe I missed something else in translation. :/

As a long-time polyamorous person, this looks REALLY bad, the kind of bad we often warn people about when they are first getting into poly. He's an older man with two much-younger female partners and while he is allowed to be poly, you aren't. This whole situation is made of red flags.
There are lots of wonderful, generous, empathic, and self-aware people doing poly, and this guy is not one of them. Please run a mile, have a rest and a drink of water, then run another mile.
My partner is out the house 11, sometimes 12 hours a day. We make it work. You can too if this is a serious relationship. Her work situation won't be the same forever.
