Well now, let's not be too harsh. He loves her, but he still found it annoying and in bad taste. The reason he is confirming here is because he's afraid of being judged as possessive. I've seen many men being labeled as such for similar reasons: not by a sensible crowd obviously, but you will find them. And sometimes you are just trying to confirm that that's not true. It's nice that most here aren't part of that crowd, male or female, so he's getting the correct advice. It's also a little different in that it's a legal issue too, not just emotional. But if he's annoyed by it and still wants to have the confirmation, he's just afraid of being judged as controlling and toxic.
