I saw a bike accident once when I was a kid. The first responders were putting a tarp over the body and it wasn't until I was older that I understood why they were putting a second smaller tarp over the helmet 15ft away.
If your bf is willing to ignore real statistics on bike accidents and thinks it's unreasonable to stop riding if he has a kid, I can only imagine what other issues will come up. I see a lot of people (never women) riding with improper footwear and protective clothing and all I can think is meat crayon. Is that a risk you are willing to live! with?
(confident as he may be, all it takes is one person in a car to get too close or to drive unpredictably to mess a biker up. Unless he has the power to control every driver everywhere ever, it doesn't matter how confident he is. If he really thinks having two wheels or two points of contact with the ground is safer and sturdier than having four, ask him why things requiring stability (chairs, tables, ladders, etc) have 4 legs and not 2)
