I mean, i don't think it has to do with how new the relationship is. It's who he is. Long distance is hot. And often phone communication is nude. You mentioned that there's often issues with service too.
More than anything i think you are making a big deal out of something small. I know communication is a large part of long distance. But you also see him for 3 out of 7 days of the week. That's a lot of time together for a new relationship especially with some distance. If you talked every single day, wouldn't be able to use that time to catch up with each other.
If it's a big deal to you still, your best bet is to just ask him for more communication. A simple “Hey, i would love if we could talk more on the days we don't see each other.”
Not to be blunt… but that tends to happen in abusive relations. He makes you think it's getting better to make you question yourself. 'Well he's not the same' bs. Yes he is. Or he's not as bad because you are doing what he demands from you. You are his servant and he doesn't need to do the same treatments to correct you. Its abusers like him that scare women into staying.
You also have the ungodly mess that they like to make. They don't just stop because someone wants to play chess. Even if you get them to be quiet, quiet kids can be sneaky kids. I know I sure was.
I'm told I was a terror at that age. Focusing on noise isn't even touching on stuff like kids getting into paints, hand creams, nail polishes, “washing” the dog with dish soap, failing at trying to put food together, etc. All that and more can easily happen in the time it takes for a chess match lol.
