Do not marry a 32 year old lawyer with $250,000 in debt! I assume she has been a lawyer for several years now. That debt is unhealthy.
Assuming she is paying 24% interest on credit cards and 8% on student loan debt, she is paying over $2300 a month in interest. Interest is likely around 1/3 of her total take home pay. That is only interest.
There is a reason why her debt is increasing. She does not care about the house and being financially independent. More likely she is ignoring the debt and trying to enjoy life.
If you marry her – you will be paying this debt. It will be your life.
While I am not a Dave Ramsey fan, your girlfriend should be eating beans and rice until her credit cards are paid off. While I am at it. Cancel that card you have with her. She will max that one out. BTW, how much is now owed on that card?
This has to be addressed today. She needs to be in full gear on repaying this debt, and doing so immediately. If her credit card debt has not decreased by at least $6,000 in 6 months, she is failing you and herself. You should absolutely end things with her. I bring this up because if she cannot correct her own behavior in 6 months, she likely wont in 6 years.
